Who teaches the lessons?

Lessons are led by Project Magnus ambassadors who bring an exceptionally high level of achievement and experience in both chess and mathematics. Our team includes national and international chess competitors with over a decade of experience, national champions, and players who have represented their regions and countries in elite tournaments worldwide. Additionally, our team is composed of highly advanced mathematics students who have excelled in rigorous AP-level coursework and are active members of prestigious academic organizations such as Mu Alpha Theta.

What sets our ambassadors apart is not only their competitive success, but also their proven experience as educators and mentors. Many have spent years teaching, coaching, and guiding younger students in various subjects.

Are lessons online or in person?

Lessons are primarily held online, allowing students across the U.S. and Canada to participate. However, limited in-person lessons may be available depending on ambassador availability, willingness, and location. Project Magnus will also host occasional in-person group camps, tournaments, workshops, and community events throughout the year.

Will students receive homework or tests?

Yes! Depending on the student’s level, goals, and program track, students may receive structured homework, practice assignments, quizzes, tests, game analysis tasks, puzzles, and review materials between lessons. These are designed to reinforce key concepts, build consistency, and track measurable progress over time, and are not meant to be stressful at all.

For individual lessons, parents can also communicate directly with the instructor to adjust the amount of homework, practice, or assessments (whether increasing or reducing them based on the student’s needs and comfort level).

Why does it seem expensive?

Project Magnus is not standard tutoring—it is personalized, mentor-led coaching. Each lesson is taught by highly accomplished chess players and advanced math students who bring years of competitive experience, teaching background, and individualized instruction. Pricing reflects the level of expertise, personalization, and 1-on-1 attention each student receives, while still being structured to remain accessible and student-friendly.

Additionally, for context, many traditional chess and math coaching services typically range from about $25–$50+ per hour depending on the instructor’s experience, with higher rates for more advanced or highly qualified coaches. Project Magnus is designed to remain within a comparable range, while offering instruction from nationally and internationally competitive players and high-achieving academic mentors.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?
